Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton announced today a second show at London’s 02 on Sunday, February 14, 2010

Today the official Jeff Beck site (unlike the official Eric Clapton sites :-) ) announced the second show at the O2 on the 14th February 2010!

(London, UK) – Due to overwhelming fan demand, and a sold-out first show, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton announced today a second show at London’s 02 on Sunday, February 14, 2010. Tickets will go on-sale this Friday, October 2nd.

On the heels of a stunning collaboration in Tokyo, Japan last February and after much speculation, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton announced earlier this month an eagerly anticipated collaboration at the 02 Arena London on February 13, 2010. The duo had only planned a one-night only performance which quickly sold out, and have this second and final show.

In what will be the must see shows of this decade Beck and Clapton will perform together and apart. The duo have shared the stage at Festivals and benefits previously, but the Japan shows at the Saitama Super Arena marked the first time they had shared the bill at a major arena. Both artists admitted to having a fantastic time on stage together and press gave rave reviews. The concerts were so spectacular for the musicians and fans alike, that the two decided to team up again at London’s prestigious 02 Arena.

Both Beck and Clapton have long and prestigious musical careers with countless honours and awards to their names. Beck has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and Clapton is the only artist to be inducted three times. Their musical paths are linked together by the Yardbirds – a band that Clapton left in 1965 and his replacement, ironically, was Jeff Beck. Since those days, Beck and Clapton have remained friends, but have only performed together a few times over the years for an occasional song at a charity event. Now, more than 40 years after the Yardbirds disbanded, the two will join together on the same stage. The duo has said that no exact set list has been discussed but they plan to each do their own respective sets followed by a joint set that is expected to be longer than their first shows in Japan.

Jeff Beck’s recent release, Live at Ronnie Scotts DVD, has gone platinum in USA, Canada and Japan. Beck is currently recording his first studio album in five years in London with Trevor Horne and Steve Lipson producing. Eric Clapton’s recent release Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD has gone multi-platinum in the US. Clapton also just completed a sold-out North American tour with former Blind Faith band member Steve Winwood.

Ticket On-Sale Information
Tickets will go on-sale Friday, October 2. Tickets can be purchased via 24 hr ticket hotline 0870 735 5000 or www.bookingsdirect.com. (Maximum 6 tickets per household).

Update 28 March 2009:

It has been reported over the past number of months that the dynamic duo has shelved its album. Some have "guestimated" that it is because the two extremely creative musicians could not see eye-to-eye during its production. Robbie's son Sebastian recently responded to our question to him as to what the real reason is for shelving the album. He replied that Eric needed to spend more time w/ his young family & it would take away from the time & dedication that he & Robbie felt was necessary to create an album to their liking. Eric will be a part of Robbie's upcoming solo album though.

Update 16 May 2009:
97 Rock News

From www.97rock.com:

Longtime friends Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson have told our 97 Rock reporters that they have started recording their first album together last month in London, and according to a source close to Robertson, it is "gong well." They've been working with drummer Ian Thomas and bass player Pino Palladino, both of whom will join Clapton on his North American spring tour, which starts Saturday in Tampa, Florida. Robertson will continue to work on the album, which will be all original material, and then get together with Clapton at the end of the summer. But be patient -- our source says, "They will take their time, and there is no release date or title."

This collaboration with Robertson is another in a series of recent projects Clapton has undertaken with friends and past collaborators. Since 2000 he has recorded albums with B-B King and J-J Cale, reunited for seven shows with Cream, and performed with his former Blind Faith bandmate Steve Winwood this past February and last summer.

‘Eric and I played together in Japan earlier this year and had a blast. Since then we have been in regular contact and talked about doing a similar show for our fans. Looking forward to the show in 2010,” said Jeff Beck.

“I’ve always considered Jeff Beck to be one of the finest guitar players around. He’s a friend, a great guy, and a truly gifted musician. We had such a fun time in Japan that it seemed natural to play together again,” said Eric Clapton.

Both Beck and Clapton have long and prestigious musical careers with countless honours and awards to their names.
Bruce Hornsby Releases New Album With Special Guest Eric Clapton

The 13-time Grammy nominee’s multifarious talents and far-ranging musical interests are prominent on Levitate, which marks the artist’s Verve debut. The album’s 13 songs span an expansive sonic and emotional palette, encompassing heartfelt insights and absurdist humor, while incorporating a broad assortment of influences within compact song structures. The material ranges from the expansive, expressive songcraft of “Prairie Dog Town” and “In the Low Country” to the gently reflective introspection of “Invisible” and “Here We Are Again,” with the album-opening “The Black Rats of London” offering a swaggering treatise on the influence of the rodents, insects and microbes upon key historical events. Such colorful moments help make Levitate a consistently compelling evocation of Hornsby’s established abilities, as well as a substantial creative departure.

Levitate (which Hornsby co-produced with studio vet Tony Berg) also features guest appearances by Eric Clapton on “Space Is the Place” and fiddler Andy Leftwitch, a longtime mainstay of Ricky Skaggs’ band, on “The Black Rats of London.”

After deciding that Washington, D.C. would be my last show of this tour, I could not keep myself off of the road! Las Vegas, eight perforamances later, did not disappoint. Both Eric and Steve are clearly enjoying themselves and have continued to experiment with the set. Tonight we were treated to "There's a River", "Low Spark of High-heeled Boys", and "How Long". Highlights included "After Midnight", "Sleeping in the Ground", "It's Too Bad", "There's a River", "Low Spark", another fantastic "Voodoo Chile" and "Dear Mr. Fantasy". Looking forward to the next stop of the tour in Oakland. Stay tuned.

Review the Houston Cronicle

Back-to-back marathons in Dallas and Houston are a fact of life for Toyota Center’s everyday tenants. The Rockets, though, should aspire to manage the feat as smoothly as a pair of 60-year-old musicians accomplished Wednesday night.

Twenty-four hours removed from a performance at the less desirable end of Interstate 45, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood mixed greatest hits with vintage blues numbers and, 10 dates into a 14-date tour, a surprise or two for an appreciative Houston crowd.

The former Blind Faith bandmates could have filled their two-hour show with a rote rendition of greatest hits but dug into the book of basic blues for numbers like How Long Blues from Leroy Carr and Tough Luck Blues from Big Maceo alongside the expected hits like Clapton’s Layla and Winwood’s Glad from his days with Traffic.

They also showed, switching sports motifs, that they can pull an audible. After performing the standard Georgia on My Mind on every tour stop so far, Winwood switched to a too-brief solo piano version of perhaps Traffic’s greatest song, The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys. Even the "Clapton is God" crowd rose to its feet for that one.

Alas, there were no numbers from Clapton’s muse Robert Johnson (too bad, given that Johnson’s best-known recordings were made in Dallas and San Antonio) and only one remnant of Texas blues, Clapton’s acoustic Drifting Blues by the late, great Texas City native Charles Brown.

Clapton and Winwood came to town on a commercial roll, given the recent release of a CD and DVD documenting their 2008 Madison Square Garden performances, seen here recently on PBS.

Included were four songs plus one outtake from their 1969 Blind Faith album (Had to Cry Today, Presence of the Lord, Buddy Holly’s Well … All Right and Can’t Find My Way Home, plus Sleeping in the Ground).

Clapton’s contributions included his mini-J.J. Cale songbook (After Midnight, Cocaine and the lesser-known Low Down from 1996), Forever Man (from 1985, one of a handful of post-1970 numbers) and, naturally, the 1990s accoustic version of Layla.

Glad, Pearly Queen and Dear Mr. Fantasy represented Winwood’s Traffic years along with Low Spark; the only songs from his 1980s commercial revival were There’s a River and Split Decision. The closer was Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Chile.

With the blues numbers factored in, the average age of the 20-song program was somewhere in the early 40s, which probably hit the sweet spot of a crowd that featured older blues aficionados but also a few parents with teenagers. Presumably, they now know how it should be done.
